Valentine's Day Origins

Found some interesting tidbits about Valentine's Day at the History.com website.  American's began exchanging hand-made valentines in the 1700's, a long time after the oldest known valentine poem was written in 1415. The English Charles, Duke of Orleans, wrote the poem to his wife when he was imprisoned in the Tower of London.

Over 1 billion valentine cards are sent each year, second behind the 2.6 billion cards sent for Christmas.

So then I started wondering why the colors red and pink represent Valentine's Day.  It seems that red and pink represent love, and red is also associated with the heart which is red.  I also came across a lot of information about what rose colors represent, and roses are a very popular gift for Valentine's Day.
